# NetKingdoms — Full LLM Reference > NetKingdoms is a passive browser MMO that maps the real internet through players' natural navigation. Every domain you visit for 12+ seconds is claimed as a territory for your faction. --- ## What is NetKingdoms? NetKingdoms is a free, open-source browser extension (Chrome, Firefox coming soon) that turns everyday browsing into a real-time territorial strategy game. Players join one of three factions — Fondeurs (Tech/Dev), Spectres (Social/News), or Nomades (Culture/Niche) — and passively capture domains as they browse the web. There is no active gameplay required. The extension runs silently in the background. Your daily browsing becomes your contribution to a shared, living map of the internet. --- ## How does territory capture work? When a player visits a domain and spends **12 seconds or more** on it, that domain is automatically captured for their faction. The 12-second threshold ensures only real, meaningful visits count — rapid tab-switching and accidental clicks are ignored. Every unique domain (e.g., `github.com`, `reddit.com`, `newyorktimes.com`) is a capturable territory. Once captured, it appears on the live interactive map with the faction's color. Another faction can recapture a territory by visiting it again. --- ## Is NetKingdoms free? Yes. NetKingdoms is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no premium tiers. The extension is free, the website is free, and the source code is open source. --- ## What factions can I join? There are three factions, each with a bonus zone: **Fondeurs (Builders)** — Bonus on tech, developer, and documentation domains (e.g., GitHub, Stack Overflow, npm, Vercel, Docker). Their strength is in the infrastructure of the internet. **Spectres (Specters)** — Bonus on social media, news, and information domains (e.g., Reddit, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, BBC, Medium). Their strength is in attention and reach. **Nomades (Nomads)** — Bonus on culture, niche, and undiscovered domains (e.g., YouTube, Twitch, Letterboxd, Spotify, itch.io). Their strength is in variety and the unexpected. Faction choice is permanent for the duration of a season. Choose based on your natural browsing habits. --- ## Game mechanics - **Dwell time (12s)**: Only real visits count. The extension ignores rapid reloads and tab-switches. - **Territories**: Every unique registered domain is a capturable territory. Subdomains are grouped under the root domain. - **Factions**: Three factions compete for dominance across Tech, Social, and Culture zones. - **Live map**: Interactive 3D visualization of all captured domains in real time, built with Three.js. - **Contested zones**: When two factions fight for the same domain, it appears as "contested" (orange) on the map. - **Ephemeral sites**: Special bonus domains that appear for 24 hours and give ×5 points. Worth targeting actively. - **Clan wars**: Groups of players can form clans and declare war on rival clans over specific territories or zones. - **Clan forts**: Clans can fortify strategic territories to defend them from capture. - **Seasonal resets**: Each season (approximately 14 days) resets the map. Previous season snapshots are archived. - **Leaderboard**: Real-time rankings of players and clans by territory count, sorted by faction. --- ## Season 0 — Pre-launch NetKingdoms is currently in **Season 0 (pre-launch)**. The Chrome extension is available now. The map is almost entirely unclaimed. Early players are the first to establish territories on what will become the definitive map of the real internet. Season 0 is the best time to join: no entrenched players, maximum territory available, and your faction's early expansion shapes the map for all future seasons. --- ## Privacy NetKingdoms records only the **domain name** (e.g., `github.com`) and a timestamp. It never records: - Full URLs (no paths, query strings, or fragments) - Page content or titles - Personal browsing history - Any personally identifiable information The extension is open source and fully auditable. Privacy by design is a core principle of the project, not an afterthought. --- ## Frequently asked questions **Does it slow down my browser?** No. The extension is lightweight (Manifest V3) and runs passively. It uses no active network polling and adds no latency to page loads. **Can I switch factions?** No. Faction choice is permanent for the duration of a season. At the end of each season, players may choose a new faction for the next season. **What browsers are supported?** Chrome is available now via the Chrome Web Store. Firefox support is coming soon. **Is there a mobile app?** No. NetKingdoms is a browser extension and requires a desktop browser. **What happens to the map at the end of a season?** The live map resets. Territories return to neutral. The previous season's snapshot is archived and available for viewing. Clan and player statistics from the previous season are preserved in the historical leaderboard. **How does the live map work?** The map is an interactive 3D visualization built with Three.js. Each domain is represented as a node, colored by the faction that controls it. The map updates in real time as players capture new territories. --- ## Tech stack - **Backend**: Symfony 7 / PHP 8.2 / PostgreSQL 16 - **Extension**: Chrome Manifest V3, TypeScript - **Frontend**: Symfony Asset Mapper, TailwindCSS - **Map**: Three.js (WebGL) - **Infrastructure**: Hetzner VPS, Caddy (reverse proxy), Docker - **Authentication**: JWT-based session bridge between extension and web app --- ## Links - Website: https://netkingdoms.com - Explainer: https://netkingdoms.com/what-is-netkingdoms - Live map: https://netkingdoms.com/map - Leaderboard: https://netkingdoms.com/classement - About: https://netkingdoms.com/about - Privacy policy: https://netkingdoms.com/privacy - Source code: https://github.com/jmcfun/netkingdoms
